Abstract

Background: Thyroid gland is one of major endocrine gland of body. It produces two hormones. Tri-iodo thyroxin (T3) and tetra-iodo thyroxin. These two hormones help in regulating growth and metabolism of body. During pregnancy thyroid hormones demand increase. Abnormality in these hormones effect during pregnancy, labour and also effect the child specially their neuro intellectual development.

Objective: Our objective of this study is to emphasize attention on thyroidism diagnosis and treatment which can helpful in minimizing miscarriages, ovulation failure and complications during pregnancy.

Methods: For analyzing the relation between pregnancy and thyroid dysfunction a study has been conducted in different hospitals and different females of community. All females selected were of child bearing age. The questionnaire comprised of many questions required inquires problems in pregnancy or failure of ovulation, treatment and prognosis.

Results: We observed that age is not a contributing factor because 45% women were from 25 to 35 age group and 55% women were from 35 to 45 age group. The study reveals that thyroxin is major contributed drug for the treatment i.e. 40%, while 30% patients use other drug therapies and 30% people are not getting any treatment. Duration of treatment depends upon level of abnormality and state of disease that was found as 45% people was treated in 1-5 yrs, 14% in 5-15 yrs while treatment of 46% patient is continue and not treated completely.

Conclusion: In females thyroidism causes failure of ovulation, problems during pregnancy and miscarriages also increases. Sometime people having many symptoms of thyroid abnormality but it is misdiagnosed and only symptomatic treatment given and the cause does not cure properly. This abnormality is usually neglected, misdiagnosed or mistreated and leads to reproductive problems but if proper treatment provides so we can minimize these complications.
